📅 Important Deadlines:
1. Telling HMRC You Need to Complete a Return
Deadline: 5 October
If you've never sent a tax return before, you need to let HMRC know by 5 October. Just register for Self Assessment, and you’re all set!
2. Submitting Your Return
Paper Return: Midnight 31 October 2024
Online Return: Midnight 31 January 2025
3. Paying the Tax You Owe
Main Deadline: Midnight 31 January 2025
Advance Payments: 31 July if you make ‘payments on account’
Don’t be late, or you might face a penalty. If you have a good excuse, you can appeal against it, though!
🤔 What if You Don’t Know Your Profit for the Whole Tax Year?
Sometimes, your accounting period might not line up with the tax year, or you might be waiting on a valuation. Here’s what to do:
Use Provisional Figures: Estimate your profit and let HMRC know these are provisional when you submit your return.
Update Your Return: You have 12 months from the deadline to correct your figures once you know your actual profit.
Paying More or Less Tax: If you owe more, you'll pay interest on the difference. If you’ve overpaid, HMRC will pay you interest. Sweet!
🕰️ Special Deadlines to Note
Online Return by 30 December: If you want HMRC to automatically collect tax from your wages/pension, submit by this date.
Trustees or Non-Resident Companies: Paper returns are due by 31 January.
Partnerships with a Limited Company Partner:
Online Returns: 12 months from the accounting date
Paper Returns: 9 months from the accounting date
Remember, staying on top of these deadlines helps keep things smooth sailing.
